Beauty pageants seem to be a big part of the Filipino culture. They have a beauty pageant for every occasion, and it seems that every town, village, city or even small group of people living in any particular area has some kind of pageant. To over exaggerate - here it would be like “Miss Flat Tire 2004” or “Miss Queen of the houses between Maple street and Main street”.
While I think there are many beautiful women in the Philippines, no matter how we value beauty, Filipinos seem to value it even more so. Sports teams (and even some organizations) have a “muse”, and it is a huge honor in a family to have someone who has won a beauty pageant.
