This page is intended to give you some general rules on driving related issues in Cebu. These are just my personal observations, put in hopefully a humorous way - and are not actual “rules” that they have in the Philippines. I just thought it would be more entertaining to put these thoughts into rules that people seem to follow.

General Rules For driving a car in the Philippines
- Pass at your own risk, as often and wherever possible.
- The car driving fastest has the right of way, unless you honk your horn first.
- Turn left in front of traffic whenever possible.
- Flash your lights to let someone know you have the right of way.
- There is no “wrong” side of the road, just a preferred side to drive on.
- Every street is a one-way street unless traffic is driving in the opposite direction.
- Always honk when passing on the left.
- Always honk when passing on the right.
- Drive as close as possible to a stray dog sleeping by the side of the road.
- If it is raining, headlights are optional.
- Replace your windshield wipers at least once while you own the vehicle.
- A no parking zone is a parking zone as long as you can see the vehicle.
- Stopping at any time, especially when there are other vehicles behind you is acceptable.

General Rules For walking in the Philippines
- Stand on the road where there is traffic whenever possible.
- Don’t look before crossing the road.
- Walk on the road, in traffic, even if there is a safe walking path next to the road.
- Walk against traffic.
- Walk with traffic.
- Walk in front of cars no matter their velocity.
- If a car has stopped for you to cross the road, make sure to thank them by walking as slowly as possible across the road.
- If there is a group of you walking on the road, spread out as much as possible to obstruct traffic.

General Rules For driving a tricycle in the Philippines
- Obstruct the road as much as possible.
- Only pull towards the side of the road to let a vehicle pass if there is traffic coming towards you.
- If there is a car behind you, drive slower.
- If you are on a non-motorized tricycle, make sure that you only take the busiest roads possible.
- If you are on a non-motorized tricycle, try to travel at night so that you can hardly be seen.
- Headlights are optional.

General Rules For driving a motorcycle in the Philippines
- Drive as fast as possible.
- Traffic signs do not apply to you.
- Headlights are optional.
- Only wear protective gear if you are the driver.
- Don’t beep, just pass on whatever side is closest.
- Don’t stop for traffic, just drive in-between cars.
- Try to fit as many people on your motorcycle as possible at all times.

General Rules For being a foreign passenger in the Philippines
- Avoid looking out the front of the vehicle unless you like to be frightened.
- Plan for at least an hour no matter where you drive – even short distances.
- Don’t drive. Hire a driver. $40 a day to include a driver at your service for 10 hours, fuel and the vehicle is worth not running over someone or getting into an accident.
- Avoid rolling down the window for beggars.
- Avoid the word Magano in front of anyone selling anything.
- Don’t buy water or food at stop lights or when traffic is stopped.
- Plan to go to the mall a lot. :)
