When you give a gift, like at a birthday party, don’t expect that the person you will give the gift to will open it in front of you or in public.
The reason being that if they opened it in public, others can see the value of the gift. If it is an inexpensive gift, you could be embarrassed to have others see it - if it is an expensive gift, other people who gave gifts would be embarrassed that they gave a lesser gift.
Also, if the person you give the gift to opens the present right away, they could seem to be greedy and only interested in the value of the gift, rather than the meaning behind it
So, to avoid any embarrassment on anyone’s part, the gifts are opened in private.
